Where crashes happen in Maryvale and west Phoenix
West Phoenix has some of the most dangerous streets in the Valley, and the city's own data shows it.
Indian School Road. The City of Phoenix's 2022 Vision Zero Road Safety Action Plan ranked Indian School Road between 91st Avenue and 39th Avenue among the highest crash-risk locations in the city. From 2017 through 2021, that stretch had 124 crashes where someone was killed or seriously hurt. 39 people died and 109 were seriously injured. Almost half of the people killed (48%) were walking or riding a bike, and more than half of the deaths (52%) happened after dark (City of Phoenix Road Safety Action Plan 2022/2023 Annual Report). The city won a federal safety grant to rebuild the corridor, but construction is not expected to start until 2028 (City of Phoenix, ReVISIONing Indian School Road).
75th Avenue and 67th Avenue. A 2021 City Council report said the Maricopa Association of Governments' list of the region's 100 highest crash-risk intersections ranked the Indian School Road intersections at 75th Avenue and 67th Avenue as the two highest crash-risk intersections in the whole MAG region (City of Phoenix, File 21-0205).
Thomas, McDowell and the avenues. The city has rebuilt signals at 75th Avenue and Indian School (January 2023) and 51st Avenue and McDowell (May 2023), and added a pedestrian crossing signal on Maryvale Parkway north of Glenrosa. Its fiscal year 2024 budget funded safety construction at 51st Avenue and Indian School, 67th Avenue and Indian School, 71st Avenue and Thomas, 75th Avenue and Thomas, 83rd Avenue and Indian School, and 51st Avenue and Thomas (RSAP 2022/2023 Annual Report). These are wide, busy intersections where left turns across fast traffic, red-light running and crashes involving people on foot are common risks.
Freeways. I-10 cuts across west Phoenix, Loop 101 runs along the west side, and I-17 runs to the east. Freeway crashes are usually handled by Arizona DPS, not Phoenix Police.
Citywide, Phoenix had 37,472 crashes in 2024. 278 people were killed and 15,057 were injured (ADOT, 2024 Arizona Motor Vehicle Crash Facts, Table 2-5).
